It was about 6 pm when Tantra realized she had some last-minute wedding errands to get done with. She had to buy some celebratory lights and cosmetics. These were only available in an area called Budhwar Peth in the older part of Pune city.

Her cousins suggested against riding down that area at this time. Tantra did not want to keep things pending. Iris, her friend accompanied her. They reached the area and started with their shopping. She saw a commercial sex worker from far off and her bright yellow lipstick irked Tantra’s eyes. The lady was draped in a thick red sari, shiny ornaments, and a bouquet perched on her

She purchased a couple of dresses and dropped them off at a tailor to get them styled up. She passed one glance at the Yellow Lipped Lady and left.

The next day, at around 10:30 am, she left home to pick up her clothes. She stood at a signal waiting for the right turn to reach the tailor’s shop. A lady came and knocked on her helmet from behind. Assuming it to be another beggar she turned around. Tantra stared at the lady for a good minute. She was the yellow-lipped lady, in tattered clothes, with the side of her breast visible through her torn blouse, the lady smiled.

Tantra, asked her to hop on her scooter if she wanted 500INR. The lady gladly did. Tantra quickly zoomed past the rush and took her into a dingy alleyway. Tantra stopped the vehicle and got down. So did the lady.

Tantra: I saw you yesterday draped in silk, what’s that about?
Yellow: That was me.
Tantra: Why the dual role?
Yellow: Money.

Tantra: Don’t you earn enough to not beg at signals.
Yellow: Madam, no one recognizes me, not even my daily customers. Whatever I earn selling my flesh during the night goes to my pimp. I am hardly given any money. I am doing this for survival, to eat food, to stay plump, to satisfy my customers, and keep my pimp happy.

Tantra: I have the option to report this and then send you back home.
Yellow: Madam, my father sold me for 1000 INR and you want me to go back there!

Tantra: What is that I can do for you to not do this?

Yellow: Come tonight, look at me, smile. I’ll be happy to know that someone is keeping a watch.

Tantra: I’ll be there!

Tantra went back that night. She saw the lady.

A man approaches the Yellow Lady.

Yellow lady: Where do you want to go?

The Man: Here’s a jacket, wear it over your saree, let’s go for dinner first and then a movie. I am lonely and need someone to spend my loneliness with. I didn’t come here to use your body, so be comfortable and be my friend today.

Yellow Lady: What, who are you?

The Man: I am Roy, Tantra sent me.

The Yellow Lipped Lady turned around only to see Tantra standing there, smiling at her!
